IVF Now Accounts for 1 in 13 Births in Jersey, New Data Reveals

For the first time, data has been released showing how many babies in Jersey are being born through IVF - and the findings are striking.

In 2025, 52 babies - equivalent to 1 in every 13 births - were conceived using IVF. That represents 7.4% of all births on the Island, more than double the UK average of around 3% (approximately 1 in 32 births).

The figures, shared by the Government of Jersey and the Women’s Health Hub, mark a significant milestone in understanding fertility trends locally - something Tiny Seeds has been calling for since the charity was founded over five years ago.

A growing role in a declining birth rate

The data comes at a time when Jersey’s overall birth rate is falling. In 2025, there were 698 births - the lowest number recorded since World War II.

The Island’s Total Fertility Rate has now dropped to 1.14, down from 1.3 and well below the 2.1 needed to maintain a stable population.

At the same time, the average age of first-time mothers in Jersey is higher than in many other places. For many, this is not simply a matter of choice, but circumstance. Factors such as the high cost of living, housing pressures, and childcare challenges are contributing to people starting families later - sometimes increasing the likelihood of needing fertility support.

Against this backdrop, IVF is playing an increasingly important role.

Where IVF births are happening

Of the 52 IVF births recorded in 2025:

  • 40 were through the Assisted Reproduction Unit
  • 12 were through the Women’s Health Hub

The data also reveals how treatment is being funded.

Out of 183 IVF cycles carried out in 2025:

  • 120 were self-funded
  • 63 were funded following the introduction of Government-funded IVF in January 2025

Among those who self-funded:

  • 90 cycles took place at the Assisted Reproduction Unit
  • 30 were carried out at the Women’s Health Hub

Higher than much of Europe

With 7.4% of births resulting from IVF, Jersey’s rate is among the higher levels seen in Europe, comparable to countries such as Denmark and Spain.

This underscores just how central fertility treatment has already become to family-building on the Island.

The unseen numbers behind the data

It’s important to note that these figures capture IVF births only. They do not include other forms of fertility treatment or the many individuals and couples who required clinical support on their journey to parenthood.

They also may not include those who underwent treatment off-island.

The true number of families affected by fertility challenges - and supported through treatment - is therefore likely to be significantly higher.

More than statistics

Behind every number is a deeply personal story.

Each IVF cycle represents hope, resilience, and often heartbreak. These figures are not just data points - they reflect the lived experiences of people navigating complex, emotional journeys to build their families.

They also highlight the growing importance of access to fertility support and treatment in Jersey’s future.

As IVF becomes an increasingly vital part of the Island’s birth story, understanding and supporting those who rely on it has never been more important.
