IVF Timeline

There are many factors that determine the course of an IVF cycle, but typically a straight-forward, full cycle, takes around one month from start to outcome and would look something like this...
Day 1

Stimulation

Usually, during a natural cycle the ovaries would only produce one egg. During an IVF cycle medication is administered to encourage the follicles in the ovaries - where the eggs grow - to produce more eggs.
Days 2-12

Monitoring

There is regular monitoring during the stimulation phase to check follicle growth and hormone levels. This monitoring can be done on island and a normal daily routine can continue around appointments.
Day 13

Trigger

Once the biggest follicles reach the right size, a trigger injection is given to help with the release of the eggs. This is the point where travel off-island is necessary.
Day 14

Egg Collection

This takes place at an off-island IVF clinic 36 hours after the trigger injection and is performed under sedation. Eggs are retrieved from the follicles, mixed with sperm and left to fertilise overnight.
Day 15-19

Embryo Development

Any embryos that result following fertilisation will be left to develop in a lab for the next few days. Regular updates are provided and while it is not required to attend the IVF clinic during this time, most people choose to remain close by.
Day 20

Embryo Transfer

Usually embryos are transferred 5 days after egg collection when they have hopefully developed into something called a blastocyst. This transfer is performed at the IVF clinic. Any additional embryos can be frozen for future use.
Day 21

The Two Week Wait

Once the transfer has taken place, the return to Jersey can be made where there will be a period of time to wait before finding out whether the treatment has been successful.
Day 30

Outcome

At this point a pregnancy test can be taken to determine the outcome of the treatment cycle.

Funding Options

Tiny Seeds advocates for fair and equitable access to fertility treatment for everyone who needs it. In January 2025, we welcomed the introduction of funded IVF for those who meet the eligibility criteria. However, we continue to advocate for broader access, as current funding does not extend to single individuals, male same-sex couples, or couples who already share a child or children.

In addition, there are a number of clinical eligibility criteria - including age limits and BMI thresholds - which may further affect access to treatment.

Funded IVF through Health and Care Jersey (HCJ) is available to eligible couples. This includes same-sex female couples who meet the criteria. The number of funded IVF cycles available is determined by gross household income.
